Dr. Hendrix is a postsecondary educator with over 30 years of experience teaching undergraduate and graduate-level classes, and training graduate students, adjunct faculty, and junior faculty to teach college classes. Her career began in California and Washington and continued at the University of Memphis in the Department of Communication and Film. In August 2022, she retired from her duties as a Professor in the Communication and Film Department at the University of Memphis where she was then granted the status of Professor Emeritus. She is an instructional communication scholar with a broad teaching range including argumentation, public speaking, listening, interpersonal and intercultural communication, conflict resolution, and qualitative research methods.
Katherine’s teaching extended to the Memphis community as a coach for mid- and upper-level managers in corporations such as ThyssenKrupp Elevators and Sonoco Phoenix. In a partnership between the University of Memphis and the Methodist Hospital system, she served as the communi-cation expert for the Maurice Elliott Leadership Institute (MELI) from its inception until the program ended in 2013. She then was hired to conduct individualized coaching for Methodist managers where she specialized in assisting those needing to rework their communication approaches with direct reports. Katherine has earned numerous national, regional, and campus awards for her teaching, research, and service including the highest award accorded by the National Communication Association – the 2023 Distinguished Scholar Award. This award recognizes her teaching and research as among the best and most representative of scholarship in her discipline.
